It’s a Doggy Mardi Gras!

I was raised just outside of New Orleans, so today is more than just Tuesday…it’s Mardi Gras!  I have so many memories of going to parades, marching in parades, eating at church crawfish boils, devouring king cake and looking at all the crazy outfits people would wear.

Well, unfortunately, I no longer live there, but I found out that there is a community in our area (yes, my favorite downtown, yet again) that celebrates Mardi Gras, but with dogs!  It’s called the Barkus parade!  I decided just to take Jerzee this year since Michael had to work, and I didn’t know what to expect.

It was more than just a parade.  There were little shop set ups for local dog businesses (including our favorite doggy treat store).  It was nice to just wander around and take it all in.

One of the fun things they do at this event is a costume contest.  The theme this year was “All American Dog” though some people just dressed their pups up in Mardi Gras colors.  All of these dogs would then march around the square for the Barkus parade!

This was the most creative, in my opinion.  They held other signs that said “No Fat Cats” and “Working Dogs =99%”.  I love wordplay, so that’s probably why I loved this so much.  🙂

After the parade, we bought some treats for both dogs (since Jerzee did SO well the whole day, and we had to leave Loco behind).  It was such a beautiful day and a great, fun event!  Happy Mardi Gras!  Laissez les bon temps rouler!  Let the good times roll!

Yes, definitely. Michael had to work that day, so I only took one dog, and it was enough just to handle her around the other dogs plus take pictures! Next year, Michael and I plan to go together, take both dogs, and possibly enter the costume contest (not sure about the last one yet 🙂 )
