Tis the season to gather in front of a roaring fire, watching our favorite movies, all bundled together! These are the ones I could watch over and over again. Sometimes it’s because they just melt my heart, and other times, it’s just the nostalgic memories that come with it. So here are my top favorite Christmas movies!
My favorite classic movie
(the 1947 edition)
There are so many reasons why I love this particular rendition of the 34th street story. Probably my favorite scene is when Santa speaks to the Dutch girl, convincing Susan that he just might be Santa Claus after all. The magic of hope and embracing long forgotten dreams is what really make this movie special to me.
My favorite musical
I created this category because I love this movie. Sure, it’s a little campy, but when Bing Crosby sings I’m dreaming of a White Christmas at the beginning of the movie, you know it’s going to be great. That and the boys rendition of Sisters steals the show. I’ve read that they included it because Crosby and Kay were just fooling around one day with the song. The laughter is real in the movie because the boys couldn’t keep a straight face.
My favorite movie traditional movie
I watched this movie every year growing up, from the VHS taping off the TV to the official DVD version we got a couple years ago (because the VHS tracking had gotten so bad). My favorite piece is always different every year. I like the camels singing We Three Kings, or the Carol of the Bells, the ice skating walruses or the California Raisins. It is always a toss up among those. It’s really quite cheesy, but it’s a tradition I like to follow every year.
My favorite comedy
This is another traditional movie in my family. The Griswald clan never fails to bring a smile to my face. From the rabid squirrel to the Christmas light gag, it’s just one hilarious scene to the next. There is never a dull moment in that chaos, and I don’t know if I would be able to cope with it as gracefully.
My favorite modern movie
Even though Elf is pretty funny, the Santa Clause has a special place in my heart. It came out right around the time that I stopped believing in Santa as an actual person, and more of an ideal at Christmas. I loved the elves and the set created as Santa’s workshop. While the following sequels didn’t really meet my expectations, the first movie of the trilogy was really sweet and cleverly written.
My favorite romantic movie
This is a new favorite of mine this year. I’ve seen it before, but this year, I watched it again. It was magical. I couldn’t remember how it ended, so it was as if I was watching it for the first time. There is so much to love about this movie – the poster board slide show, just about every scene of the prime minister, and the beautiful love story between Aurelia and Jamie. I could watch this movie again and again.
I have several others that interchange with these each year, but for this year, these are my top picks. What shows are you loving this season? Are there any categories you would add?
