Fall TV Lineup

Every year, I look forward to the new fall tv shows.  I watch the trailers in the summer, and carefully plan when I will watch all the pilot episodes (or returning shows first episodes).  We don’t have to watch them on television since we have Hulu, but there is something nice about looking forward to watching them old-school style if we are able to.  It’s like reading a new book or watching a movie just a little bit every week.

This year, though, there haven’t been a whole lot of shows that I’ve just been dying to see.  Plus, some of the trailers that were on this past summer are for shows that are coming out midseason next year.  It’s been quite a bummer.

In addition to that, there are some shows I’m avoiding right now because of my own recent circumstances.  “This is us” is one of those shows.  I’m glad that pregnancy loss is beginning to be a conversation in mainstream television (even in the trailer), but I just can’t right now, you know?  There are some other shows that we used to watch that now have a pregnant main character so we are going to skip them for the time being as well.

But!  There are a few shows that I have been enjoying, plus one that hasn’t debuted yet, so I wanted to share them with you.  All photos are taken from IMDB.com.

Timeless (Mondays at 9 on NBC).  This show premiered this week.  I’m immediately drawn to period pieces.  Nothing is revealed in the pilot episode that isn’t shown in the trailer, though.  I want to give it a few more episodes because I felt like the original episode was a bit disjointed.  It was fun, though, and the places, or times, they teased for the upcoming episodes should be interesting.  Also, Matt Lanter is in it, and I liked him in Star-Crossed.  Hoping this will be good, but it’s TBD.

Bull (Tuesdays at 8 on CBS).  It stars the guy from NCIS, Michael Weatherly, who plays a psychologist that does trial science.  Every week, it looks like it will be a different trial, addressing a different social concept.  The most recent episode was about gender bias.  I think it’s interesting.  I’m a big fan of social psychology so this show is right up my alley.  I will definitely be watching this season.

Speechless (Wednesdays at 7:30 on ABC).  I love this show already.  Minnie Driver is phenomenal, and John Ross Bowie (played Kripke on the Big Bang Theory) is also incredible as the dad.  It’s really well done.  I have laughed out loud a couple times in the last few weeks.  Great story, great delivery, and a great show all around.

The Good Place (Thursdays at 7:30 on NBC).  This is either going to be great or really uncomfortable to watch.  Ultimately, I’m watching it from a philosophical perspective – can someone who is “selfish” become altruistically “selfless”.  Plus, the fake cuss words crack me up.  Kristen Bell is hilarious, as well as the rest of the cast.

The one show that hasn’t debuted yet that’s on my list is Pure Genius.  It’s about the incredibly rich tech guy who creates a state of the art hospital to treat extreme cases (with the hidden agenda that he will also be one of these cases soon).  I liked the trailer, although I know that there will be one pregnant case, but I don’t think it will be a major part of the season, just an episode.  We shall see, though.

Other shows that I’m continuing to watch this season are Brooklyn 99, Agents of Shield (the ghost rider story is good and I want to know all of it right now!), The Goldbergs, and Modern Family.  It’s a lot less than I usually watch, but I’m enjoying all of these so far.

What shows are you loving or looking forward to this year?

  1. I haven’t seen Timeless yet but I’ve been looking forward to that show! #historynerd hahaha
I also like those mindless food network shows like worst cooks in America and Halloween wars.
