April Favorites

I have had an absolute blast this month. Michael’s busy season is coming to an end, and we celebrated Easter as a family. So many favorite moments, and here are a few more favorites this month.

Book of the Month

I usually don’t like a book with a lot of profanity in it, but this has to be my favorite this month simply for the fact that it challenged me on how I see and operate in the social media realm. Plus, it’s a great story. I wrote more about it here.

Baby

I bought this book for Sam for Easter. I love, love, love Matthew Paul Turner’s books. I have all three of them, and I will probably by any of the future ones he writes. His poetry (because that’s what it is) accurately reflects the love of God and for children so perfectly. You can check out more here.

Beauty and Fashion

I received my new FabFitFun box at the end of March so I have been playing around with a few of the products, like this Tula Purifying Face Cleanser. It’s a gel so it’s a different consistency from the other cleansers I’ve used in the past but it makes my skin oh so soft! I love it!

Like most subscription boxes, I can get you a bit of a discount and they will also give me a discount. The Spring box is going to be shipped next month and I already made my choices, so I’m anticipating some great products. You can still order the Spring box. Here’s the link for the discount.

Entertainment

Another movie from the TBW list, Mary Poppins Returns was absolutely adorable. I also watched Saving Mr. Banks this year on Netflix before I saw this one so the movie was a little different for me.

The plot follows the same formula as the first one. There is a scene with animation, a scene where they end up on the ceiling with a strange relative, and a scene of street workers dancing. There is even a scene at the bank, but I don’t think there was a song this time. Predictable, but cute. And Miranda and Blunt are darling. They do fix the unrequited love that Poppins and Bert seemed to have in the first movie…none of that in this one, but there is still love in the air.

March Favorites

This month wasn’t as short as the one before, but it still felt like it went pretty fast. Here are some favorites from the month of March.

Book of the Month

I love a good mystery series, and this is the second book in the Truly Devious series by Maureen Johnson. I wrote a review for it here.

Baby

We are entering the sippy cup phase and have tried a few of them. The
Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup is pretty neat because it allows Sam to drink without the water going everywhere. Plus, he can get water from it no matter how he holds it. And it stands up to being banged on the table, which he does a lot. It does spill a little, but it’s usually only if he bangs the cup upside down. And they are pretty affordable which is always a win. We got them from here.

Beauty and Fashion

I use different scents depending on the season, and the Spring scent is lavender. So, when I was trying to find a good shampoo and conditioner, I came across this brand. I used it last Sunday, all three products, and it was phenomenal. I really need something to help my frizz and also be something I can use quickly. The leave in conditioner is probably my favorite, but I loved all of them. Plus the brand seems very eco-friendly which is a plus. You can try it here.

Entertainment

Still chipping away at my TBW (To Be Watched) list. Michael and I finally have a couple of hours on Friday night to watch a rental movie together. This was our first choice and it didn’t disappoint.

Miles lives in New York, and Spiderman is a major presence in his life. He is a graffiti artist with a cop dad and goes to a magnet school. He is bit by a spider around the same time a portal opens which brings other “Spiderman” characters into his reality. But they need to get everyone back where they belong and close the portal for good or New York is going to be destroyed.

The movie was hilarious. My favorite was probably Spiderham, who was played by John Mulaney. I immediately recognized his voice, but I didn’t recognize Nicholas Cage who played Spiderman Noir until I looked it up. The timing was just really great on a lot of the jokes, plus it pokes fun at the comic as well.

February Favorites

This month is the shortest of the entire year, but I still had a few things I really enjoyed. Here are the favorites.

Book of the Month

This was a solid five star read for me. On the Come Up by Angie Thomas is her second book written in the same neighborhood as her first, but I wouldn’t call it a sequel. I wrote a review for it here.

Baby

Sam is starting to be so interactive and fun. It feels like he is learning new things every day. It’s been neat to play with puzzle toys like the Fisher-Price Brilliant Basics Baby’s First Blocks with him. And when he puts the right shape in the holes, we dance around and celebrate. We received this as a hand-me-down gift, but I found the exact one on Amazon.

Beauty and Fashion

I’ve been using the Moroccan Gold Series Treatment Mask once a week for the past month, and I love it. It smells so good and my hair is so soft after I use it. I got this from my winter FabFitFun box. Another win for me.

Like most subscription boxes, I can get you a bit of a discount and they will also give me a discount. The Spring box is going to be shipped next month and I already made my choices, so I’m anticipating some great products. You can still order the Spring box. Here’s the link for the discount.

Entertainment

Still chipping away at my TBW (To Be Watched) list. This was one that came out last November and we watched on Redbox.

Clara arrives at her Godfather’s house and follows the string to her gift, which is a path to a beautiful, magical place first discovered by her mother. But the world is in trouble because one of the realms is trying to take over the other realms. And Clara has to learn to trust and believe in herself to prevail.

The movie was stunning. The sets, the costumes, just gorgeous. There were also beautifully choreographed ballet sequences throughout the movie. It is a good way to introduce little ones to ballet. Plus, Misty Copeland (the famous ballerina) is in the movie and dances in the credits. So awesome.

It’s definitely a good watch and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend.

January Favorites

What a month. We have been dealing with some illness in our little family lately, so a focus on favorites is just what I need for a pick me up.

Book of the Month

I had a few strong four-star reads this month. I’m still working on my last book of my TBR (The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath), but I’m really happy with the books I’ve read so far this year. If I were to recommend one, it would be this one, It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way by Lysa Terkeurst. I wrote a review for it here.

Baby

As I’ve said, we have had a lot of illness in our house this month. So you better believe we have had at least one pack of these in every room. We use saline drops as well, but when you hear that sneeze (and you know the one I am talking about), it’s good to have these nearby.  You can check it out here.

Beauty and Fashion

Michael bought me the Winter box from FabFitFun.com because I was really intrigued. It was on sale for about $30, and you got a lot of products in the box. In fact, I think the Winter box is still on sale, although from what I understand, you don’t get all of the exact same products. It seems that they change them for new products once the old ones run out, but I haven’t seen much that I wouldn’t enjoy getting. Anyway, that long explanation brings me to this face mask. I couldn’t find it on Amazon, but it’s a mask that you can either put on for 5 mins or leave on overnight. It’s the perfect hydrating mask for me on nights I don’t have much time. And I love the feel of my skin when I wash it off.

Like most subscription boxes, I can get you a bit of a discount and they will also give me a discount. The Spring box comes out next month and I can’t wait to see what they have in store (which will probably be Michael’s Valentine’s present to me). Here’s the link for the discount.

Entertainment

I am a bit behind on all of the movies. I realize that this came out last summer, but it’s the first in my TBW (To Be Watched) list that I could finally rent (the next one is in February…it’s not weird to watch the Nutcracker in February, right?).

It’s basically a documentary on Fred Rogers. There are some things about his childhood, his education, the famous speech that saved PBS, and his later years where he was parodied and the rumors swirled. I remember those rumors as a kid. It was fascinating how they were addressed. Also, I learned a few things that warmed and broke my heart.

It’s definitely a good watch and if you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend.

Devian by Shanna Bosarge: A Review

The Elemental Union: Book One Devian by Shanna Bosarge
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I got this book in a farmer’s market in Georgia while visiting family. It’s a fantasy with some elemental magic, a girl with a mysterious past, and a robust world. I was in.

I’m not familiar with this author’s web series, so I went into this world through this book. I have to say, the beginning was a bit overwhelming, with a lot of unfamiliar places, people, races, dates thrown at me. But I regained my footing around the 50-page mark.

The story is about a girl with silver eyes named Sterling. Her parents die when she was born and she is taken and hidden by a loyal slave named Hemi. On her twenty-first birthday, her origin is revealed to her and she begins an epic journey to find her family. She loses people that she loves along the way, is tortured, and generally shunned by society because those silver eyes mean she is part of an outcasted and hunted race.

There are some typos throughout the book, but they don’t take away from the story. The pacing is pretty good. The story, itself, is excellent. I’m going to keep my eye out for the next one to be released because there are a lot of questions left unanswered.

There is profanity in the book, but not much. There is also some sexual content. There is an instant-love story early on, but then the character basically disappears from the rest of the book. There is also a rape scene, which is then alluded to several more rapes that followed. But it’s not detailed, however, it may be triggering for some. There is violence, a lot of fighting. There is also torture and hunting. But again, it’s not overly detailed.

I think this book is definitely a diamond in the rough. The author loves this world and knows it very well. It definitely comes alive through the story. Interested in the next one!

Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness: A Review

Time's Convert

Time’s Convert by Deborah Harkness
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed the original series, so I knew I would enjoy this extension of the story. It is pretty important to read the All Souls Trilogy before this book. There are a lot of references to characters and major plot points. So, fair warning before you read this book.

The main story follows two of the supporting characters from the trilogy, Phoebe and Marcus. There is also a subplot which follows the two main characters from the trilogy, Matthew and Diana. Phoebe and Marcus are mates. Phoebe is a human that is transitioning to a vampire in this book. Marcus became a vampire during the Revolutionary War. The book mainly follows these two transitions.

What I loved most about this book was the historical fiction aspect. In telling the story of Marcus, the author recounts parts of the Revolutionary War, the French Revolution, the yellow fever outbreak in Philidelphia, as well as what it was like during that time in places like London and New Orleans. It was absolutely fascinating. This author does the interweaving of historical figures like Thomas Paine and Benjamin Franklin with the fictional vampires and witches so well. It actually prompted me to look up some of these events since I had never heard of them before (primarily the yellow fever outbreak).

There was a major familial theme throughout the book. What makes a family and what is your responsibility to the family you choose or is chosen for you? How should we treat our children? In the acknowledgments, the author mentions her father who passed away in 2015. I can see how her relationship with her father heavily impacted a lot of the relationships in this book. Especially with Marcus who came from an abusive home as a human and spent a lot of time searching for a true father.

There is profanity in this book. The “F” word is used a few times. There is also a good bit of explicit sexual content. When vampires are transitioning from humans, they go through an “adolescent” stage which makes them have a lot of hormones. This led to sexual fantasies, some dirty conversations, and a sex scene. There is also a time when Marcus is being trained as an aristocrat that they compare handling a sword with masturbation.
There is also some violence in the book, although it spans the time of both the French Revolution and the Revolutionary War so there is bound to be some loss. I didn’t feel it was very graphic or explicit, though. They even include Dr. Guillotin in the story who proposed the guillotine as a new form of capital punishment (used for Marie Antoinette – not a spoiler, just history).

I really enjoyed this series. I highly recommend it for anyone who likes a bit of historical fiction with their paranormal stories. I would caution with the above caveats about the content, but it’s definitely worth a read.

It’s Not Supposed To Be This Way by Lysa Terkeurst: A Review

It’s Not Supposed to Be This Way: Finding Unexpected Strength When Disappointments Leave You Shattered by Lysa TerKeurst
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a great book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through hardships or suffering of any kind. She writes this book of faith and truth while she, herself, was still in the thick of her own unknown. And I think it really helps give a sort of credibility to what she is writing. She writes with both compassion and a sense of challenge to the reader.
The only thing I had a slight issue with was some of the writing. She tends to rely heavily on alliteration, wordplay, and rhyming to get her points across. In this context, if I was someone going through tough times, this kind of writing would help me remember in little bites some of the truths that she talks about. But it can get repetitive and sing-songy in a way that took me out of the story a bit.
However, the Fighting Words chapter is bookmarked and set for when the next crisis in my life happens (because I know it will come). There are some amazing scriptures and reminders in that chapter. But I recommend reading all of the chapters before it because I feel like the previous chapters lead up to this one.
Of course, there is no profanity or sexual content (other than some stories of infidelity but it was about confessing to it, not the actual act) or violence in the book. It is heavy material though, something to be studied over weeks at a time. I was told that she is leading a study of the book sometime soon, so if you have a chance to be a part of that, I would encourage it!

November Favorites

It’s almost the end of the year!  On to the November Favorites

Book of the Month

I had a few books I really enjoyed this month, but Truly Devious was really good.  And I’m looking forward to the next book in the series in January.  I wrote a review for this book here.

Baby

So, originally, I bought this outfit by ZOEREA because I thought his Halloween costume wasn’t going to come in on time.  It actually did serve as a warmer version of his costume, but we have actually just had him wear this on cooler days.  Plus, my husband loves the hat.  He basically wants him to wear this hat all the time.  It is pretty adorable.  You can check it out here.

Beauty and Fashion

Sephora at JC Penny had a face mask sample kit available this month, and I’ve been loving a nice face mask or serum at the end of the day lately.  It’s just a little bit of pampering that helps me relax before going to bed.  I tried this one, which was in the kit, and absolutely loved it.  It really does feel like you are putting dirt on your face, but my skin felt so soft and lovely afterward.  It’s definitely in the running as one of my all time favs.  You can get it for yourself here.

Entertainment

I waited until after Christmas to start indulging on all the sappy Christmas movies.  We don’t get the Lifetime channel, but Netflix seems to be bringing their own game this year.  I’ve seen this one, The Princess Switch, and the Holiday Calendar, and I was surprised that I liked this one better than the other.  Although both have their moments of cheese.

The premise of The Princess Switch is pretty straightforward.  One rich girl who longs to be normal convinces an average girl that happens to look exactly like her to switch places.  And there is a baking competition thrown in (with some very elaborate cakes showcased at the end).  Even though it is completely predictable (which is good with my anxiety), it was really well done.  It’s sweet and a nice hour and a half escape to a far-off village where royalty and sugar cookies are the highlights of the day.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson: A Review

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had heard so many people talking about how good this book was, and I thought it would be perfect to read in October. It’s a double murder mystery with many twists and turns.
Stevie loves a good murder mystery. It’s an obsession, really. And when she has an opportunity her junior year to attend a ritzy school with free tuition that also had an unsolved murder, she took it. But when there is a death on campus, her detective skills have to work overtime, to the detriment of her relationships and schoolwork.
The plot is pretty fast-paced. Most of the chapters include both the present day story and snippets from the original murder mystery from the 1930s.
Stevie’s character transformation was really well done. She arrives at the school with anxiety and a loner mindset but slowly learns to trust, have that trust broken, and trust again. The ending revealed a surprise that might test that trust yet again. I’m looking forward to learning more in the next book.
There is profanity in the book. It shows up in the later chapters so it took me by surprise. As far as sexual content, there is a makeout scene, kissing, and some discussion of sex but no graphic sex scenes. And the violence in the book is not graphic at all. The deaths are not discussed at length, though they do describe the position the body is present day is found in.
Overall, I thought it was a good mystery, not too scary and perfect for this month. The book ends in a major cliffhanger, so I’m definitely anticipating the next book in January!

October Favorites

Each month seems to be going by so quickly!  On to my September favorites!

Book of the Month

I really enjoyed reading this book, even though it was shorter than books I normally read!  It was a delightful collection of essays about reading.  They were so relatable!  I wrote a full review here.

Baby

Sam seems to be entering the teething phase, so when we have reading time, most of the books end up in his mouth.  On a curious whim, I searched for chew-proof books, and this came up.  So, I bought one, and I love it!  They are five bucks and really are rip and chew proof.  You can check them out here.

When I was pregnant, my skin would get super dry, but I wanted a moisturizer that would be safe for me and the baby (and with my anxiety, this was almost an obsessive search).  This is what was recommended, and I’ve continued using it all year.  It isn’t greasy and makes my skin feel great.  If I don’t put it on, especially on drier days, I can feel my skin dry out and tighten.  As we approach winter, this is definitely a good buy.  You can check it out here.

Entertainment

There haven’t been a lot of shows that I’ve wanted to watch lately.  Even some of the shows that are coming back that I’ve enjoyed in the past.  Having a baby is one good measuring stick for priorities and interests (although it’s not the only one, it’s been a good one for me).  So, when I look forward to each episode of Manifest every week, it says something.

The premise is that a plane disappears for five years but the passengers didn’t age.  In fact, from their experience, it was just a simple flight.  So there is the grief of losing five years, people on the ground moving on, and all that.  And then on top of that, there is a supernatural element as the people on the plane start developing these insight powers, like knowing something is going to happen or where certain things are hidden.  Plus, a lot of the premise is based on Romans 8:28, which is a neat little fact.  Really enjoying it so far.
