Then Moses said to him, “If your Presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us? What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?”
And the Lord said to Moses, “I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.”Exodus 33:15-17 (NIV)
Right before the above verse, the people worshipped a golden calf while Moses was receiving the law from God. God gets angry and tells the people that they are welcome to go into the promised land, an angel would be sent ahead to defeat their enemies, but that God would not go with them.
Moses enters the tent of meeting to plead with God to change his mind. He says the above verse. Even though the people would be guaranteed success against their enemies and would get what was promised to their forefathers, they still needed their God. Moses reiterated that they needed to be known as God’s people and that God was with them. And the Lord agrees because he was pleased with Moses and knew his name.
That is a prayer in my own life, that God goes with me through every success and failure. Whether success or failure isn’t the important thing. The important thing is that God is with me. I long to know God and be known by God, and to continue this journey with him beside me every step of the way.
